Statement on Hurricane Michael

Greetings Colleagues,
Many of you may have been monitoring the weather and you are aware that Hurricane Michael made landfall along the Florida panhandle and entered southern and central Georgia yesterday. We are relieved that the hurricane had a minimal impact on Atlanta as the storm’s path was south and east of the metro area. While there were some flight delays and a limited number of flight cancellations, most of our conference attendees arrived without incident. Therefore all conference activities have taken place as scheduled. Likewise the remainder of all scheduled events will proceed as planned.

If you are planning on arriving in Atlanta today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday) we don’t anticipate any travel disruptions unless you are coming from North Florida, South Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina. Please check your airlines for any residual flight delays.

Finally, we are mindful of all those who live in areas that were impacted by the storm. Hurricane Michael was/is a very strong storm and unfortunately the storm has taken two lives and over a million are without power. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Raphael Bostic
President and CEO
Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta

Dr. Raphael W. Bostic took office June 5, 2017, as the 15th president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He is responsible for all the Bank's activities, including monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, and payment services. In addition, he serves on the Federal Reserve's chief monetary policy body, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Prior positions include: Judith and John Bedrosian Chair in Governance and the Public Enterprise at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC); director of USC's master of real estate development degree program and founding director of the Casden Real Estate Economics Forecast; and assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Bostic was born in New York City in 1966 and grew up in Delran, New Jersey. He graduated from Harvard University in 1987 with a combined major in economics and psychology. He earned his doctorate in economics from Stanford University in 1995. He has previously served on many boards and advisory committees, including the California Community Reinvestment Corporation, Abode Communities, NeighborWorks, the National Community Stabilization Trust, the Urban Land Institute, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, the National Economic Association, and Freddie Mac.

Andrea Young
Executive Director
American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia
Andrea Young has devoted her career to promoting policies to defend and extend civil and human rights. Prior to her current role at the ACLU, Young was an Adjunct Professor at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. For many years, she served as executive director at the Andrew J. Young Foundation working to preserve and leverage the legacy of her father - a former Atlanta mayor, Civil Rights leader, U.S. Congressman and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Young's public service has included roles such as: legislative assistant to Senator Edward Kennedy; Chief of Staff for the first woman to represent Georgia in Congress, Cynthia McKinney; Vice President for External Affairs for Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington; and Vice President of the National Black Child Development Institute. Young is a graduate of Swarthmore College and received her law degree from Georgetown University School of Law. Young is the author of Life Lessons My Mother Taught Me; co-author of Andrew Young and the Making of Modern Atlanta and collaborated with former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young in writing, editing and researching An Easy Burden: Civil Rights and the Transformation of America.

Carmen Yulín Cruz
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Carmen Yulin Cruz, named one of TIME Magazine's Most Influential People of 2018, has been a strong and outspoken force advocating for much needed federal aid in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands more without shelter, food, water and power. In 2012, Cruz was considered a long shot candidate, when she was elected Mayor of San Juan City defeating three term-incumbent Mayor Jorge Santini in the mayoral election. She is the third female in this role and is now in her second term as mayor. Her venture into public service in Puerto Rico includes: advisor for the San Juan City Mayor; National President of the Political Education Institute of the Popular Democratic Party Women Organization; member of the San Juan Reorganization Commission; and member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, elected to an island wide at-large seat. Cruz earned her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Boston University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She completed a Master of Science in Public Management and Policy at the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University and spent 12 years living and working in the United States in management and human resource roles for Colgate-Palmolive, Banco Popular, Cellular One (now AT&T), Scotiabank and U.S. Department of Treasury.
