Student Survey
NASPAA conducted a nationwide survey of current MPA/MPP students in Fall
2008. More than 3,200 students responded on why they chose the MPA/MPP
degree, their school and career interests.

of Admissions Directors
The first (Fall 2008) survey by
NASPAA of admissions directors and those responsible for recruiting shows
that joint degree programs, especially for law where 54% reported having a
joint degree, are popular. The survey was distributed to 400 NASPAA
contacts. One hundred and forty-two admissions related staff or faculty
responded.

MPA/MPP Admissions Survey Shows Jump In Application
NASPAA conducted a quick poll with admissions directors in April asking about any application increases. We found that 82% of schools that responded are showing an increase in applications.
Specific breakdowns regarding size of application increases are as follows:

Twenty five percent of schools responding report an increase in applications
of 20% or higher
- Thirty one percent of responding schools report an increase in applications
of 10 to 20%

Twenty five percent of schools report an increase in applications of 1 to 10%
(13% are seeing no change in applications. 6% saw a slight decrease)
60% of schools responding say they will increase their enrollments as a result of their increase in applications. Some of those schools, and others who will keep the enrolled number of students the same, will strive to have a better mix of student’s. The main reason given for the increase in applications is the perception that government hiring will be increasing and the demand for recruiting trained public service professionals.

Nonprofit
Survey
NASPAA conducted a survey of its institutional members to find ways to assist schools with nonprofit student recruitment and employment. The survey was distributed to more than 260 member schools. Eighty-eight schools responded to the survey. The most common offering of nonprofit study was a nonprofit concentration within the MPA/MPP (53%), followed by coursework but no formal concentration (40%). One-third (33%) of schools reported having a nonprofit certificate.

City and County Manager Survey
Partnering with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) NASPAA conducted a national survey of city and county managers to learn more about the future job market for individuals (with a Masters of Public Administration, Public Affairs, and Public Policy) who wish to work in local government. Over 400 ICMA members responded to the survey conducted in 2006. NASPAA and its 256 member schools are using the survey findings to improve the quality of their MPA and MPP programs, curriculum and in turn our graduates.

Federal Employer Survey
Partnering with the Government Executive NASPAA conducted a national survey of senior federal executives to learn more about the future job market for individuals (with a Masters of Public Administration, Public Affairs, and Public Policy) who wish to work in federal government. Over 300 Government Executive subscribers responded to the survey conducted in 2007. NASPAA and its 256 member schools are using the survey findings to improve the quality of MPA and MPP programs, curriculum and in turn our graduates.
