2021 NASPAA Annual Conference

#NASPAA2021 Recap

#NASPAA2021 was once again a fully online experience where the NASPAA community was able to share, learn, connect, and showcase in a safe and sustainable way on Oct. 25 – 29, 2021.

In total, there were 752 conference attendees from 32 countries and over 300 universities. There were a total of 78 panels and 10 workshops featuring 340 different speakers.

The theme, “Reimagining the Civic Square”, fueled hard-hitting conversations, discussing voice in the civic square of 2021 America and the world, and on speaking truth to power in pandemic management and policy. Tracks centered on:

  • Create a Laboratory for Change through our PA Curriculum and Research
  • Listen to Students and Co-create Civic Engagement and Service Learning
  • Reach Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Covid to Achieve Equity and Justice
  • Repair the Torn Global Fabric
  • Public Service Values Across the Undergraduate Curriculum of the University

Topics covered: Assessment, Budget and Financial Management, Diversity and Social Equity, Doctoral Education, Emerging Trends, Global Issues, Local Government Management, Nonprofit Management Education, Research, Small Programs, Sustainable Development, Teaching and Learning, and Undergraduate Education.

Opening Plenary

Eric Schwartz, President, Refugees International

NASPAA’s opening keynote speaker was Eric Schwartz, the president of Refugees International and a professor and former dean on leave from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at University of Minnesota. Friday Plenary

Dr. Rhea Williams-Bishop, Director of Mississippi and New Orleans Programs, W.K. Kellogg Foundation

For the Friday Plenary, NASPAA was honored to present Dr. Rhea Williams-Bishop as the keynote speaker. Rhea is the director of Mississippi and New Orleans Programming for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. In this role, she supports the foundation’s efforts to promote thriving children, working families and equitable communities. The 5th Annual George V. Voinovich Public Innovation Challenge

The Winner is University of Nebraska Omaha

Craig Maher, professor of public administration at the University of Nebraska Omaha, has won the fifth annual George V. Voinovich Public Innovation Challenge. The winning presentation focused on Next Generation Service Corps, a program that offers undergraduate students the chance to apply cross-sector learning to affordable housing policy.
